“Otherworldy” is one of those catch-alls that people tend to overuse when describing art that isn’t immediately comprehensible. (I know I’ve used the term more times than I care to count.) So when I describe Sam Wolfe Connelly’s body of work as otherworldly, I’m not trying to classify the inexact and obscure, no, I’m saying Sam Wolfe Connelly’s art is otherworldly. It’s a beautiful world, to be sure, but it’s not ours. Connelly’s landscapes are of unforgiving people and places that seduce as easily as they maim and disfigure. All of this, by the way, is what makes his work so incredible. But what happens when Sam’s nightmarish environs collide head-on with body horror’s still-reigning king, David Cronenberg? I’ll give you a hint: wonderful, amazing, terrifying things.
